Lusail Stadium

Lusail Stadium’s facade is designed as a burnished golden vessel, inspired by traditional Islamic bowls and lanterns.

Location:

Doha, Qatar

Type of Work:

Commercial Design

Completion Date:

March 2022

Overview

Lusail Stadium’s façade is a burnished golden vessel inspired by Islamic craft. About 4,200 triangular aluminum panels form a perforated diagrid screen that wraps the bowl. This intricate cladding shades, filters dappled light into concourses, and cuts solar gain, boosting efficiency. Its geometry echoes Qatari lanterns (fanar) and regional motifs, fusing culture with climate response.

A diagrid of 48 slanted columns supports the golden envelope, improving thermal and acoustic performance. At the base, undulating gray GFR concrete strips contrast the gold, creating a floating effect. With a 307 m cable-net roof, the façade contributes to a five-star GSAS rating. Night lighting deepens the metallic glow at scale
